Some Questions About Grilling For The Holidays

What do most people grill for the holidays?

That will depend upon what time of the year it is. During the summer months, there are more hamburgers and hot dogs grilled. Some may smoke a brisket or a pork shoulder for pulled pork.

At other times of the year, you will find at Thanksgiving and Christmas, some of the favorites on the grill are turkeys and hams. It truly depends upon what you desire to grill.

What Is The Best Grill For The Holidays?

That will depend upon what you are grilling and the flavor you want. For example, if you like smoky flavors, it will be difficult to get that flavor with a gas grill, using a charcoal or pellet grill will be the best option. On the other hand, if you need to have a large amount of meat cooked in a short amount of time, you will want to use a gas grill,

How large should my budget be?

When planning for your holiday meal, you will want to be able to purchase enough for all your guests. Do comparison shopping before you purchase anything, by going to the website of the major grocers in your area you should be able to find the best price for your needs.

Your Budget

The Great American Grill Can Smoke Or Grill Your Meat To Perfection
Grilling Ideas For Your 4th of July Celebration

Now that you know for certain that you will be hosting a 4th of July celebration, you need to decide how much the budget will be. Will there be cost-sharing for the celebration? Who is bringing what or are you paying for all of it? What will be the main item grilled? How many of the sides need to be grilled before the meal (corn on the cob). Now that you have a budget in mind, make a checklist of EVERYTHING, costs, items, food, beverages, games, first aid kits, kids, you get the idea. If it is going to be at your cookout then it needs to be on the list.

With the cost of everything going up, cost-sharing may be the best option. Cost-sharing is something that more and more people are doing as well, this helps everyone’s budget. By cost-sharing, you can all agree on a menu long before your event arrives. This will also allow you to expand your budget.

This allows you to get your main ingredients ahead of time. You will, by this time, have an approximate total of the number of people that will be there for the festivities. You should have a checklist to go by for the meats, side-dishes, place settings and any other items you may need. Someone needs to be in charge of the music, games and fireworks if they are allowed in your neighborhood.

Organize Your Event

By having your event well organized, you should be able to save some money. This will also give you the advantage of being able to have a number of events for all to enjoy. Organization can help you avoid last minute crises, for example, you may not have enough disposable plates or cutlery.

Since you have organized your event, go over your checklist. You may think you are Santa at this point, making a list and checking it twice, but it can save you a tremendous amount of stress, money and frustration.

The Main Event

Kebobs Have A Smoky Flavor Using The Great American Grill
Grilling Ideas For Your 4th of July Celebration

The main event will be what has been grilled. For this holiday, there are so many options available to you, that making a decision may be difficult. It doesn’t have to be. What do your guests like and what do they not like. Being in charge of the grill, you may want to do some of your favorites, such as hamburgers and hot dogs.

Each of us has to make decisions as to what is to be grilled, based upon our experience and personal preference for grilled food. This year you may want to try something new. Something new may be sides and not meat. Some sides are absolutely, awesomely fantastic on the grill since it releases even more flavor. We will save that for later in this post.

Brisket

If you are planning on brisket for your 4th of July event, you may want to smoke it a day ahead so you can spend time with friends and family. I know it tastes best when it just comes off the grill but, with the right planning, you can reheat it for a few moments on the grill and not lose any flavor. Reheat it just long enough to get it hot and take it off.

Ribs

The Great American Grill Smokes These Chops Delightfully
Grilling Ideas For Your 4th of July Celebration

You may have decided to do ribs. You can start smoking them in the morning, to be ready for the early afternoon meal. Ribs are great anytime and for any occasion. Low and slow when smoking ribs bring about great flavor and tenderness. If you use barbeque sauce, don’t put it on until the last 5-10 minutes of cooking. This way your sauce isn’t burned but the outstanding flavor you have created is off the charts.

Pulled Pork

Depending upon what time you will be serving, you can have your pork butt smoked for an evening meal. It will be nice and tender with all the smoke flavor you want. You will have enough time for it to rest before you pull it. I normally do the pulling and make barbeque sauce available for anyone who wants sauce. Making my barbeque sauce, while it may take 10 hours to prepare, adds a new dimension of flavor to the meal.

The Great American Grill Loves Chicken

Chicken is a favorite item to grill for the 4th of July of and for many holidays. Since chicken is easy to grill and is cost effective, it may become something that you grill on a regular basis. There are several different ways to grill chicken with great success. You can put sauce on it (5 minutes before it is done) or you can roast it with a rotisserie, great success is to be had either way.

Easy Sides For An Event

Grilling Ideas For Your 4th of July Celebration

Most people stick to the sides they have known since childhood for grilling events. This year you may want to change them up a bit for the 4th of July. One of my favorite sides is jalapeno peppers stuffed with cream cheese that is prepared on the grill.

This is how I do them:

  • wash the jalapenos
  • split lengthwise
  • remove the seeds(spoon works best)
  • fill with cream cheese(cheddar) or the cheese of your choice
  • preheat the grill plate to about 400F
  • place jalapenos on grill plate
  • allow the cheese to melt
  • blister your peppers in the process
  • remove from grill.

One thing I have found to help when grilling main ingredients or sides is the use of olive oil on the grates or some of the vegetables like zucchini or squash.

The most important thing to remember when you are grilling your sides is that imagination will lead you to greater inspiration. You will find that as you explore different ideas that different flavors will come to mind for exhilarating flavor and dishes.

Schedule Events Using The Great American Grill While Waiting

This time of the year people plan celebrations commemorating the founding of the United States of America with our Declaration of Independence. There may be some people may show up early to socialize or to help with setting things up for the day.

Some of the things you will want to have organized are:

  • when to start the grill
  • what time guests are to arrive
  • appetizers
  • side-dishes to prepare or will be brought
  • place settings and cutlery
  • drinks
  • ice
  • desserts
  • games
  • fireworks if allowed

By having your celebration organized, you will cut down on the amount of lost time with your family and friends. You will also be using your checklist to make sure that you have everything covered. If you find that you have missed something then you still have time to correct it and still have a great day.

Plan For The Kids With The Great American Grill

All too often, kids are forgotten about and will be running underfoot at the wrong time. I have found that if you have some fun activities planned for them then everyone has a great time.

Great American Grill
Grilling for the Holidays

Some of the games I have found the games most enjoyed by kids are:

  • cornhole
  • water gun(if allowed)
  • water balloons (if allowed)
  • backyard bowling
  • pool if available
  • bingo.

By using your imagination, you will find a variety of games that all can enjoy. You may find they are having more fun than you. It will be interesting to see who has the most fun when everyone gets involved. You will be creating memories that will last a lifetime.

Cleanup The Great American Grill Afterwards

Cleanup is always something that is dreaded by everyone who hosts an event. This can be easily taken care of during the course of your event. For some of the smaller messes, have several trash cans available to everyone to put their plastic cups in as well as the disposable plates and cutlery.

If you don’t have a number of trash cans available, use a wire hanger and attach it to your porch railing to put your trash bag on. This allows your guests to put their trash in the bag to cut down with having to pick up so much after your celebration. It is another quick easy way to have your guests help with the cleanup, without them knowing they are doing so.

The Great American Grill Roundup

Let’s do a roundup of what we have gone over in this post. We have taken a look at your budget, finding ways to get the most from the money that is available. In fact, some of your guests may have contributed some money for a better celebration or they may have volunteered time with the setup or cleanup for a better event.

You have take the step of making a plan for organizing your event, being certain to follow a checklist to keep from overlooking anything that may be important for your event. By taking the time to make a checklist, you have reduced the risk of overlooking an important part of your event.

You took a look at the budget so you could decide what the best foods to prepare would be. Your selections are sure to be tasty, fun and enjoyed by all. You kept to your budget and found ways to stretch your money further than expected.

You set up a schedule of events to make the time pass faster, especially for the kids. With the help of others, you have successfully had the best possible event for everyone. Now that you have your plan in place, you wonder how will I be able to duplicate this event for my next celebration. Just remember that when you plan, your events are more successful.

Hi Jerry there was a lot of really good information here.  I found you when I was looking for ideas for the long weekend BBQ party with my family and friends.  I have never used charcoal before.  I have a propane BBQ and a Traeger for smoking which I love for Brisket, Chicken and Ribs.  Can you help explain the difference from cooking with charcoal to the Traeger and Propane grill and should I also add a charcoal grill into the mix?  Thanks!

      Hi P J,

I am glad you found the information to be useful. Hopefully, you will be able to put most of it to good use for your BBQ party with your family and friends. The difference with gas and charcoal or even pellet, is the taste. With gas you are not going to get that smoky flavor unless you put wood chips in a container that will allow the chips to produce smoke. If you are using charcoal or pellets then you will have on problem getting that smoky flavor, also charcoal and pellet grills cook slower than gas. This  is very important when smoking a brisket. Charcoal grills you will have to keep an eye on them to be sure that you have plenty of charcoal for the long smoking cycle with a brisket. The most important thing with a brisket is they need a long time to cook. I generally use this formula in smoking my brisket 1 pound to 45 minutes at 225F. Enjoy your weekend.

Can you do something similar with fathers day?

is it possible to make a buffet out of this and serve the food you’ve listed on it?

I’ve come across the greatest article ever. You saved me from time and thinking. Only if there were more sites like this out there to help people with what you should cook and organize for some type of event. July 4th is coming up and everyone knows how big it is.

Ribs and Brisket are the best darn food there is to exist. They taste so good you just want more. It can make you full because of how much it is, I can’t even finish half a brisket and I save myself from ordering the full one. Even with ribs, the barbecue that goes with it just completes the dish.

The smell is what makes your mouth water as you see the waiter coming toward you with your food and you just lay your eyes on it the entire time knowing you are going to devour it. This guide has been very helpful, especially with how you can organize your event.

I’m definitely saving this site because it is very helpful and the type of website I’ve been looking for too. A site where you can get ideas and it tells you by step with great information on how to do it.

      Caleb,

You can use this information for any holiday. Father’s Day is a good example of another holiday you can use this article for but you can use these guidelines for any holiday. I find that by organizing your grilling event that is goes smoother and everyone has a better time.

When ribs and brisket are smoked correctly, there is nothing to compare them to. That smoky flavor on such tender meat that just melts in your mouth will have you coming back time and again.
I will continue to post articles like this for you to learn from.

My favorite food is grill, specially steak and brisket, well it is good to plan everything before if you are deciding grill for a group,  where I come from we do the same planning, but we use a little  different type of grill, others are all the same, and the planning.

Is this a tradition to grill on 4th of July in USA?

This is a great topic to talk about all day, it makes me hungry).

      Moses,

I love grilled steak and smoked brisket as well. When grilling for a group, I have found that by planning every detail in advance, you are less likely to forget that one item that you will need. I always use a check list and go over it several times to make sure that everything is taken care of.

Even though you use a different type of grill, the important thing is having the right amount of heat for grilling at the right time. This allows you to have the best flavor possible.

      Pasindu Dimanka,

If you have never grilled before, you may want to start with something easy to grill. I am not sure what is grilled in your country but I would suggest starting with something like chicken. Chicken is easy to grill and you can use a variety of spices until you find the flavor you like best.

    Hello

Love the article. It goes over everything you have to keep in mind when preparing for the 4th of July Celebration party and, to be honest, I never paid attention to some aspects like activities for kids or who brings what. I will use the advice you have given me this 4th of July and for the grills to come.

    Keep up the good work.

I am glad this post resonates with you. All too often, kids are forgotten about and then get in trouble because they are in the way. By having activities for them or allowing them to be part of the prep will build memories of great times had by everyone.

Preparation and planning a little ahead of time can make your 4th of July backyard a fun and memorable event for everyone who participated.

People coming together bring joy along. Some are good at grilling to perfection and others at decoration and game planning. It’s a little more convenient for the crowd if your house is where the venue will be and you are the start griller.

Distributing responsibilities and checking on prior to the event to make sure you have all your stuff. Making an excel sheet and tracking can organize better.

We camp outside in a state park in a big group. We raise an equal amount of funds from each family to buy everything. Every family has assigned responsibilities to buy goods for the event. Someone with buy corn cobs and fruits, other drinks, marshmallows. A friend of ours is great at grilling. He marinates chicken and vegetables and brings them over. We gather on the day of July 4th. We camp overnight and sleep inside our tent.

In the end, the money is calculated either everyone gets back some or pays some. The leftover goods are offered to everyone if anyone wants can take them. It works really well.

      Anusuya,

Hello my friend. It is good to hear from you again. I see that you already have a system in place that works for all the people involved. I feel that it is important to do it the way you group has it set up. Assign a task to a person(s) who have experience with that particular task. This way everyone has a great time. Glad you commented.

    Hi Jerry,

This article is very useful for me. I can use these tips when hosting one of my BBQ parties here at my place. Or any party for that matter.

I see that organizing the BBQ is important, especially because we always have many kids around the house as well.

Thanks for explaining how to prepare the ribs (my favorite). They are always a hit, everybody loves them.

I certainly have a thrill for the grill, so I’ll check out your future posts for sure.

      Ezra,

Thanks for reading and commenting. I realized the importance of organizing my events when on a couple of occasions there were some things not allowed for. One of them being, the kids had nothing to do but all the adults were having a great time. The kids were constantly getting in trouble and were bored, but when we started planning activities for the kids EVERYONE had a great time.

When planning for you event, make a simple checklist of what is going to be needed and either ask others to bring them or talk to them about helping out financially. This way everyone contributes in some way for a great event.

Having a barbeque to celebrate the 4th of July is such a good idea. And yes, if you are hosting, you want to make sure that your grill can accommodate the amount of food you will be cooking for your guests. Your budget will be important, but remember you will be using the grill on many other occasions as well, so it is worth choosing one that is value for money.

Sharing the cost is the way we normally do a party. Asking your guests to bring something to put on the grill, as well as a salad or desert and drinks, makes hosting an event far more affordable. And the same goes for cleaning up afterwards. Everybody wants to have a good time, but don’t leave the host with the mess.

Thank you for sharing some great ideas and tips.

    1. Jerry McCoy Avatar

There is a tradition in most of the United States for a BBQ for the family and friends. There is almost as much grilling done for the 4th as there is for Thanksgiving. One of the biggest differences is the number of people for each event. Many people enjoy being out of doors during this event and have started having popup canopies to help give everyone a place to enjoy the event. The number and range of outdoor fans has increased with their ability to deliver cooler air for the patrons.

Having the right grill to do all the grilling for your event is very important to your success. You may have to grill some items in stages, such as grilling your vegetables last so they are fresh for the table. You can still “warm” the meat up at the last minute for the meal. This is going on the assumption that it was prepared earlier. This is another way for everyone to have a great time.

Thanks for reading and commenting. There is nothing like a great BBQ experience. By budgeting and inspiration you can come up with a variety of items to grill that won’t break the bank. Have a great time with your next event.

Great article, Jerry, and one we needed but may not have known we needed it. It is all simple stuff for the most part but now I have a printout and steps to take and options. I cook for our small family and am not very experienced at it, The most difficult part is deciding what to cook. I can Google how to do it if I have all that I need. With your article I have some great options and my mouth waters at each one.

      David,

It is always important to take the proper steps for hosting a party (no matter the size). Deciding on what to prepare may often be the most difficult decision but that will be determined by the size of your party and what everyone prefers. Decide on what you can afford along with the number of people should help with what is to be grilled. There are a number of sides that can be grilled for your meal. Good luck with your next grilling event.
