Can go Almost Anywhere

As you know, most portable grills require you to transport them to their location, before you begin to grill. The Coleman Roadtrip 285 Stand-up grill is equipped with wheels that make transporting it very easy, with few problems. With a weight of only 47 pounds, which sounds heavy, but since it is on wheels it is a breeze to change locations with it. It is great for use on a patio, or camping, or you can use it when you go tailgating.

People Often Buy a Griddle For Easier Cooking

The Coleman RoadTrip Swaptop griddle is an excellent addon to enhance your grilling experience. Using this griddle allows you to have breakfast when on a camping trip. It will also allow you to grill vegetables that would be difficult to not prepare. One example, grilling mushrooms and onions to go with your steaks. Another example, grilling stuffed jalapenos as appetizers.

Thoughts on the Coleman Roadtrip 285 Stand-up Propane Grill

I have found the money along with the ease of use, this is an excellent grill for tailgating, camping, and home use. The one-pound gas cylinder used most often is certainly handy for tailgating and camping, but having the option of using an attachment for using a propane tank makes it even more desirable.

For a longer cook-time, for example, simply add the hose and tank for home use, few grills offer you the option for home-cooking or taking your grill to grill for camping or tailgating.

Either way, the ease of use and portability of the Roadtrip 285 is an excellent buy. You can grill for the length of time you desire then move your grill to another location easily. The weight may be a bit heavy for some but by paying attention to your path it should not be any more of a concern than it would be pulling a suitcase while traveling.

I watched my younger brother use one of the Roadtrip 285 grills for several years and he never had any complaints with it. I have used this particular model myself and found it to be easy to use and very versatile.

This grill is great for grilling at home or taking on a camping trip. If camping is not for you then you can also take it to a park for that special time away from home but want to grill for friends and family.

Benefits

  • Easy to Assemble
    • It only takes a few minutes with a limited number of tools to have your Roadtrip 285 up and going.
  • Cooks Several Items at Once and Has Room for More
    • You can cook your favorite foods quickly and easily with the Roadtrip 285. The 285 square inches of cooking space gives you ample room for cooking for a few or for a crowd.
  • Great for Tailgating and Camping
    • With the ease of folding the grill down to transport you not only save space in your vehicle but you can just pull it like a suitcase over most terrain with ease.

Drawbacks

  • Lid Lock
    • The lid lock can come unlatched when moving it to your tailgating or camping area. You need to check it to ensure it stays locked.
  • Side Handles Are Weak
    • The side handles are riveted on but do not provide much support. Rivets appear to be too short.
  • Difficult to Clean
    • Taking the water tray out to clean can be difficult if you are not used to cleaning a water tray that collects grease from grilling.

This was an interesting article. The video says a lot about the product, so I can see why you didn’t put much of your own personal opinion into the article. You did good by promoting the accessaries along with it. I, being from Louisiana can find plenty of uses for a grill this size during a hurricane. Propane hoses are versatile, which means that while its sweet you put the portable tank in the article, you could have included the large propane tank as well. You are definitely promoting its small easy to transport qualities. But when advertised the grill cover for storage I thought “If its not going anywhere, why not hook up a big tank?”

      Alex,

The reason I did not put my personal opinion in the review about the Roadtrip 285 propane grill is that I wanted others to form their own opinion about the grill. I LOVE the Roadtrip 285. It is very versatile and can cook large amounts of food when required.

I mentioned the accessories because I have found they enhance the grilling experience for me. Since, you are my neighbor in Louisiana, you know the advantages of being prepared for any grilling experience that comes along. In your case being prepared for a blow that will come up time and again. It always is good to be prepared.

Hi Jerry! Looks like a nice grill. For my own use it seems to be a bit small of size. I usually do food for my five person family and need a bit bigger grill than this. Do you know if Coleman has a bigger version of this grill, as it seems to be very useful otherwise?

    Cheers!

The Coleman Roadtrip 285 is mostly used for camping and tailgating. I have not seen a larger one with Coleman. It is a very handy grill it can cook large amounts of food at one time but if you need something larger then you will have to look at another brand. This one is meant to be portable. It sounds as if you need one that is more of a permanent fixture.

Yeah, it truly sounds like my kind of thing. I mean, durable, dependable, and affordable. What else is there? It’s like the perfect thing. Plus, it comes in green which my wife will certainly love.

I loved the video on assembling it. I think that fits an article like this perfectly. Moreover, it shows you exactly what to expect when you actually open the box. Which is awesome and a ton of useful. I also loved the section on pros and cons. I think they summarize the thing pretty neatly. As for cons, I don’t think that any of them is a dealbreaker for me. 🙂

Other than that, I love that you didn’t just make empty promises. I truly think that this is affordable. Looking forward to having one. Thank you. 🙂

I was very pleased to find out how easily it went together out of the box. I watched my brother with his and we were grilling in about 10 minutes after assembly. I understand about the color, my wife’s favorite is green as well. You can cook so much at one time on this grill that you will wonder why people get other grills that are heavier and cannot be moved once placed. I hope you enjoy your Roadtrip 285 Propane Grill.

Very informative article. The Coleman RoadTrip 285 definitely looks like it will be great for any tailgating activities or cookouts at home or away. With plenty of room for any size cookout this grill will be able to handle it all. I wish Coleman would solve the issues of cheap latch mechanism and weak handles. It’s something I’ve often seen on other portable grills as well. Seems they all have the same problems.

    1. Jerry McCoy Avatar

Coleman is working on those flaws. My brother had one for almost seven years and never had a problem with it. He went camping in some pretty rough places and had no problems with it at all.

I have found that I can cook almost anything on the Roadtrip 285 with no problems and still had room left to add other things. I cooked baked potatoes on there and when they were almost done I grilled asparagus, corn on the cob and peppers. I used a flat top made for it and it worked like a champ.

My whole family are meat-lovers and on road trips we always stop by different restaurants and drive-throughs which mostly end up disappointing and not as good as we expect, that’s what makes most of the road trips not such good experiences despite the whole family being there. This product will be a real game changer because next time we go on a road trip we will be able to pack up our own meat and grill anywhere we want since you can take this grill almost everywhere. Great review and very portable product.

      Paul,

One of the nice things about the Roadtrip 285 is when packed it folds down like any suitcase with a handle. You can put it in the back of your vehicle and drive to your destination with no worries. My recommendation for packing your food for grilling is to put it in containers that have lids on them  and put them inside a cooler to keep them at the right temperature. This way not only do you have your grill but your food is packed in such a way that it is easy to get too.

Also, if some of your food needs to be marinated, it can be marinating as you drive to your destination. This way you will have the taste on the road that you had at home. Win-Win. You have the grill and the flavor. You can also use ice packs to keep your food at the right temperature. You can also use containers to put your ice in for your drinks that way you do not have to go fishing for your drinks.

      Thanks for the comments.

I want to buy a nice little grill. I want to take it camping. I usually run out of propane in my big grill mid-meal. So it would also be great to be able to pull this small grid out in those occasions too. I have been told that the side handle is weak, so I will be careful with it.

The side handles may seem a bit weak but with extra care they should be fine.

You should enjoy this grill for years to come. When you are not camping and use it at home, I would recommend buying the regulator and hose to give you more cooking time. This will enable you to try more dishes and find flavors that your family will enjoy for years.

I was looking for a portable grill to take with us camping, as the grills we had my husband did not like them and wanted a bigger one. Thanks for sharing everything you bought to go with the RoadTrip grill and how to assemble it, I am going to buy this grill now! This review was awesome and going to share it with my friends who would benefit from this review.

I hope that you enjoy your Roadtrip 285. It should have the capacity you are looking for. It is easy to assemble and move from place to place. You also have the ability to add a regulator and hose for longer grilling time. That would be for home use. It folds up like a suitcase and will save you room for transporting while travelling.

This is something that I would use in my house, to be honest. Yes, it is designed for traveling, but the size is ideal for me and a couple of friends. If you have a bigger family than yea, you need a bigger one. Also, I think it would be great if you live in an apartment and you have a balcony, such a versatile piece of products.

    1. Jerry McCoy Avatar

It is great for apartment living as long as the rules of the apartment complex are followed. You may be surprised once you try it as to  how much space there is to use when grilling. Good luck to you with your grilling. I also review recipes and compare them to the ones I have made from scratch.
