Cooking On The Pit Boss 700FB

You have a variety of ways to make the best use of this grill. In total, there are eight ways to cook on this grill.

They are grill, bake, smoke, smoke, braise, roast, barbecue, and char-grill. Each type of cooking requires different temperatures. That is no problem for you. At last, you have begun your journey to becoming a pitmaster.

One added feature of this grill is the lever giving you the ability to change to sear at a moment’s notice.

This wood pellet grill allows you to give restaurant-quality flavor to your home-cooked meals but, without the price.

Wood Pellets Make The Flavor

When choosing your food for cooking on your grill, you must also pay attention to the flavor of wood pellets. Luckily for you, there are numerous flavored pellets on the market for you to choose from.

You may even find that you had an adventurous side to you. Flavored wood pellets will change the overall flavor of your grilled foods. Finding the right flavor will only complement your dish.

Room To Amaze

This wood pellet grill gives you room to amaze your guests with the amount of food you can grill at one time.

You will be able to grill around 32 hamburgers at one time. As you gain more experience you find yourself wanting to host a block party or just a family reunion there is room to spare.

Suddenly, you find yourself the envy of friends and family with the awesome flavors you create on your wood pellet grill.

The different dishes you can create are limited only by your imagination. Using flavored wood pellets, different recipes, and a desire to grill like a pro all come together once you start to use this grill.

Your journey to becoming a pitmaster has begun while you were experimenting.

Space For The Pellets

Finding space to store your wood pellets is at times challenging. However, this pellet grill has a wire bottom rack for storing your pellets when not in use.

For those long smokes, you have a 21-pound hopper that virtually eliminates the need for reloading your pellets. There will normally be enough pellets in the hopper for that extra-long smoke.

Let’s Move

Often times when you place your wood pellet grill, your spot seems ideal. Later, you realize that there are times when you are exposed to more sunlight than you prefer.

What can you do about this? With the Pit Boss 700FB wood pellet grill, this poses no problems. Lift the handle on one end and let the two large wheels take the weight and reposition your grill.

Having the option of moving your grill to another location makes life so much easier. Finally, you don’t have to worry about the weather as much since you can position your grill where you need it.

Keeping The Temperature Right

Your Pit Boss has a large LED displayer for you to set your temperature for your grilling needs. On some pellet grills, the LED is small making it very difficult to set the temperature properly.

You will notice the Pit Boss 700 pellet grill comes equipped with a thermometer centered in the lid. This allows you to check the internal temperature instead of relying on the PID technology.

It has been noted that while the PID technology is very good, some improvements still need to be made.

Advantages

  • porcelain grill grates
  • digitally controlled burn system
  • 21-pound pellet hopper
  • Flame Broiler™ Lever which allows for direct flame searing up to 1,000°F

Disadvantages

  • hard to start
  • may have inconsistent temperature
  • parts were broken during shipping
  • auger jams occasionally

My Thoughts On The Pit Boss 700FB

Pit Boss 770FB Wood Pellet Grill

There are many pellet grills on the market at this time. It is my opinion that the Pit Boss 700FB wood pellet grill is one of the better grills available.

This grill is a mid-sized grill. The size of this grill makes it perfect for small to medium-sized families. Having the ability to cook for just a few or a larger group is one of the best features of this grill.

When choosing a grill, you need to decide the size and price you are willing to pay. This grill fits most price points with ease.

It is priced for the average family, not to break the budget. For just a little more money you can also purchase the cover to go with your grill for protection against the elements.

If you were wanting to grill for several people or just a few this grill allows you to change how much you grill with just a few minor adjustments.

Starting with 30 burgers for today’s grilling event, then switching to smoking ribs or brisket for tomorrow is no problem at all.

Having large wheels helps you store your grill in almost any location. You can wheel it to one side, out of the way, to enjoy your patio or deck even more

  1. Hello! 🙂

I loved your article! I have no experience with grills but the features of this one look very intriguing. I’ve only ever used barbeques, but, I’ve heard from other people if you are looking to get a great quality smoke, braise, etc on your food, a big grill is the way to go opposed to a simple barbeque. The only concern I would have is the Temp gage LED indicator/ the temp gauge on the front of the grill.

I know you mentioned in your article the tech aspect is nice but often hard to see, and the other actual temperature reader is often not as accurate. As a former chef personally, this is not a con I would be content with. Mainly because, if you’re cooking/grilling meat on a grill, it needs to arrive at a certain temperature to be safe to eat.

If not gauged properly, you could risk food poisoning your guests. Not something you want to have happen at a party, or family/friend gathering. If I bought this particular grill I would probably combat that issue by using a properly calibrated electronic temperature gauge. I use them in my kitchen at home and they work perfectly so long as they have been calibrated in the right way. (You can read your manual that comes with them to find out how to do this) if you already have one.

How many years do you think a grill such as this would last if stored outdoors even with a cover on it when not in use? I know barbeques can last up to 7-10+ years if stored with a cover to avoid water, rust, etc. But, I’m unsure about big grill setups.

In using barbeques over the years, another issue I’ve often encountered is the inconsistent temperature on a grill top. It’s very hard to get an even and equal temperature across all of your (steaks, chops, and burgers) on a grill unless you move them around so as to adjust where they are getting hit with the heat. I’m honestly shocked at how much of my family when at gatherings will cook burgers on a regular barbeque to a charred crisp just to make sure they are completely cooked.

Resulting in essentially burnt very dry burgers, but oh yeah totally well-cooked through. I dislike barbeques for that main reason. You could just temperature gauge the burgers all throughout the cooking process to ensure the perfect internal temperature. But, this isn’t something I enjoy doing outdoors in the hot sun for hours.

I much prefer cooking in a frying pan indoors on my gas range stove top in my kitchen. But, to each their own! I think if you are someone who enjoys outdoor entertaining with barbeques, smokers, grills, etc. This would be an awesome addition to your grilling arsenal of products to impress your guests with.  However, for myself not my cup of tea personally.

A fantastic article though on something I know zip nada about! I learned a few good things about a large wood pellet grill that I did not know before reading your article.

    Thanks for a great read!

      Cal,

This is a mid-sized grill, there are many that are much larger. You mentioned your concern with the temperature gauge being in the center of the lid. That is easily remedied by purchasing a thermometer that can be placed inside the grill. You may also buy a probe that can be attached to the control box to measure the temperature in the cooking chamber.

This grill is very easy to use. Follow the directions in the manual for the best results. Knowing how long it takes to cook an item on the grill for the best flavor and tenderness makes your event that much better.

I had a similar grill a few years back and I love the way these thing cook meat. I would take that any time if I had to choose between this or the oven. The way the meat is flavored by the pellets is a unique experience. And what better way to spend with friends or family than to cook with the grill on a sunny day out in the open.

      Stratos,

I have found that smoking with a pellet grill is so easy. My wife has decided that I will use mine most nights. She likes the flavor better than from a charcoal or a gas grill. This gives us time to put everything else in perspective.

Being a charcoal cooker myself I often wonder about the true advantages of pellet grilles. Although the convenience of not having to tend to your fuel medium may be of advantage, it seems that the art of barbecuing is being pushed into the ‘let the grille do the work for you’ realm. What kind of warranty comes with this grille, and is it comparable to others? You mentioned PID technology versus a standard thermometer, what is PID, and why does it leave much to offer? Also, wouldn’t a jammed auger be cause for concern on a brand-new grille, and also the hard starting you mentioned? Just curious, because if I ever do consider a pellet grille I’d like to know.

      James,

People are using pellet grills more often because of how easy they are to use. I also love a charcoal grill. Having the convenience of not having to tend your fuel allows you more time to do other things.

A PID controller is an instrument used in industrial control applications to regulate temperature, flow, pressure, speed and other process variables. PID (proportional integral derivative) controllers use a control loop feedback mechanism to control process variables and are the most accurate and stable controller. This allows you to insert a thermometer into your meat and as it cooks you can see what the temperature is. You will be able to tell when your meat is done. Most of this technology is Bluetooth to give you more freedom.

It is very rare that an auger becomes jammed. I have noticed that this happens most often when people do not follow the directions and remove the pellets after they have used their grill. This is caused mainly by the pellets swelling due to high humidity. I use my grill on average 4 times a week and have had no problems with it.

This is a great review article Jerry on the Pit Boss 700FB Wood Pellet Grill, I appreciate your thorough and informative approach and can tell you have a passion for grilling that I haven’t seen very often in the types of reviews.

I remember many years ago when these first came out and all the old heads turned their nose up to the idea but have more recently heard testimonials from multiples owners of pellet grills who have been won over by the technology and wouldn’t think of using anything else now!

Do you have an idea of the range of temperatures The Pit Boss 700FB Wood Pellet Grill can cook at?

    1. Jerry McCoy Avatar
      Jerry McCoy

      Joseph,

The temperature of the Pit Boss 700FB is typically between 180-500F. You can reach up to 1000F when you use the lever for searing. Most people use it in the lower settings.

The technology of pellet grills has evolved so much in the last few years that grilling is coming close to being automatic. As a result of the innovations in technology, you have more options on what and how you grill.

  5. Jerry! Thank you so much for this post. I was just thinking about buying a grill for the summer and didn’t know where or what to get. This will be my first big boy grill s I am excited. When I was a kid I never thought that I’d be putting this much effort and energy into buying a grill, I guess I am officially a dad now/.

      KD,

You will be amazed at how easy it is to use this grill. Follow the instructions when assembling your grill. You will find it so easy to use that you will want to use it often. Buy a cookbook that is just for pellet grills, you will be amazed at some of the dishes you can prepare. Congratulations on being a dad, your child will want to help you when they get to the right age. This is a legacy you can pass on to them. The desire to have freshly grilled food with all of the great flavors.

This was a very informative review of this grill. We have been looking to purchase one for this coming year as we have a lot of parties that we will be hosting this year. I will add this one to my list.

I especially like how it has all the different options of ways to cook. Grilling outside is my favorite thing to do in the summer time. I definitely prefer it over cooking inside the house.

Now is this grill goo enough to be able to be on a porch (like a deck) or does it need its own area like on a small cement pad? As I live in a smaller house in a development so that is something I need to consider

    1. Jerry McCoy Avatar

      Amanda,

This grill can be put on a patio, a deck, or its own pad. It is easy to maneuver to the location you desire. Make sure you have the ability to plug it in, you may need an extension cord for this. I would recommend buying the cover for protection when you are not using it.

You will enjoy this grill immensely! This grill will actually save you money. A 20-pound bag of pellets costs much less than a bottle of propane and is comparable in price to charcoal, your pellets last longer than charcoal and in some cases longer than propane.

You will have the opportunity to grill while spending time outdoors with family and friends. This type of grilling helps you strengthen your ties with family and friends.

Thank you for your honest review; it’s great to hear that the Pit Boss 700FB wood pellet grill has many features that make it an excellent choice for me. The heavy-duty steel construction, eight ways to cook, and ability to sear at high temperatures are just a few of the features that set this grill apart from others on the market and make it unique. I also loved the convenience of the wire bottom rack for storing pellets and the large LED display for setting the temperature. Oh my God. We will definitely get one. Overall, the Pit Boss 700FB is a fantastic option for us as we love to grill with our friends and family.

      Ziya Rose,

I was certainly surprised at how well the Pit Boss 770FB performed. I love to grill but decided to try some of the other methods that were in a cookbook on pellet grills. The results were amazing. Look for cookbooks that are for pellet grills and try some of the recipes. You will be amazed at the dishes you can now do on you grill.

Hey, thanks for the great review of Pellet grill and sharing specifications with us. So helpful. I prefer wood pellets instead of using gas as fuel. As you mentioned in your post, it could be a great advantage for users. I think the price is fair and it is worth buying it. you can have big party weekends and do not be worry of the food because you can grill 32hamburgurs at one time.

There are so many different ways to grill with a pellet grill, the only thing that can slow you down is your imagination. This grill has so much to offer that it will take years to find all the ways it can be used.

Wood pellets help give each dish a unique flavor that is not overpowering.

With the wood pellet grills can you only use pellets or can you also use charcoal without damaging the grill? The reason that I ask is that we don’t readily get the pellets here. They obviously haven’t taken off yet like in some countries, but I really like the grill. My hubby loves this type of cooking and I think he would enjoy something like this for his birthday. I like that this one is small as often he cooks for just two of us.

      Michel,

You can only use wood pellets in a pellet grill. You can order the pellets from Amazon or from the manufacturer in most cases. It should not be a problem getting pellets from either of these suppliers. Your husband would love this and once he has mastered this type of grilling, he will prefer it over other types of grilling.

I’m only familiar with gas barbecues, so discovering the option of using wood pellets for grilling was quite surprising. I’m glad that you provided the level of detail about the grill in the article, such as the size, color, and fuel type.  Additionally, I’m pleased that you shared the 8 different ways to cook on the grill. So if I get one I know what I’m doing. Describing the advantages and disadvantages of each method can help people make informed decisions about how they want to cook on their grill. Thanks

Once you learn how easy it is to use a pellet grill, you may find that grilling with other types of grills just doesn’t work for you anymore. Pellet grills give you 8 options of how to grill and the flavor profile you are trying to achieve. The use of different flavored wood pellets can bring your food to another level of flavor.
